2019: Petrozavodsk and Joensuu - 25 years of sister-relations

  

The sister-cities agreement was signed in 1994 by the Mayor of Joensuu Aaro Heikkila and the Mayor of Petrozavodsk Sergey Katanandov. Cooperation agreements between two cities were updated three times – in 1998, 2002 and 2007.

The jubilee is a reason, on one hand, to assess the path traveled, on the other – to outline directions for further joint activities.

The city of Joensuu is the center of North Karelia (Finland), founded in 1848 by the order of Tsar Nicholas I. In the XIX century it was a city of handicrafts and trade. Today Joensuu is one of the growing university and innovations’ centers of Finland.

   

Over the years of cooperation, various joint projects were implemented between Petrozavodsk and Joensuu and direct contacts were established between organizations and citizens in different areas:  a number of youth actions are developing between the cities; there are regular exchanges of schoolchildren, teachers, athletes, and specialists in various fields.

The Jubilee program will include a number of informational and cultural events, different festivals, seminars and presentations of tourist organizations, exhibitions, devoted to the 25 years of cooperation and etc. The history of relations between the cities will be presented on the archive documents’ exhibition and a round table of researchers in November. Lots of joint festivals and different official performances will attract attention to cultural life of sister-cities and increase tourist flows in both regions.

The first joint event of the year is a round table “Inclusive cultural services: technologies of positive interaction with people with disabilities” with participants from Joensuu.

It took place on February 15 at the City Hall in Petrozavodsk within the International winter festival “Hyperborea” and the “Culture open – creation culture together” ENI project. Presentation about Parafest in Joensuu was one of the most interesting topics.

                                

A tourist presentation of Petrozavodsk and Karelia which will start 25th jubilee between Petrozavodsk and Joensuu in Joensuu is going to be on March 22-23 in Network Oasis, Temple of Challenge and Prisma trade center.

The Finish guests can take part in the “Cultural Autumn in Petrozavodsk” in October, visit friends and meet Russian culture.

    One of the symbols of Joensuu is a wolf that goes asking in marriage.
